A smarter way to support subject-specific writing in Read&Write.
We’ve introduced Custom Topics for Word Prediction in Read&Write for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, making it easier for students to access the vocabulary they need, when they need it.
This update is available now for Read&Write for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge users.
What’s new
Every subject has its own language. From science terminology to historical concepts, students are often expected to use precise vocabulary to show their understanding.
With Custom Topics, users can now create their own topic dictionaries from a page or selected text. They can generate a custom topic from a full webpage or from selected text within a document. The selected words are then added to Word Prediction, so relevant, subject-specific vocabulary appears as they write.
This means students can:
- Access the right academic vocabulary more easily
- Spell complex subject terms accurately
- Write more efficiently without stopping to search for words
- Stay focused on expressing their ideas
For educators, this helps ensure writing reflects understanding, not just spelling ability.
Designed for real classroom writing
Writing places multiple demands on students at once. They need to organise ideas, remember key terminology, structure sentences, and spell accurately, all at the same time.
Custom Topics reduces that cognitive load by bringing the right vocabulary into prediction automatically.
Instead of struggling to recall or spell subject-specific words, students can focus on demonstrating what they know.
That means:
- More independent writing
- Clearer expression of subject knowledge
- Greater confidence in extended writing tasks
When students can access the words they need, they’re better able to show their thinking.
Supporting confident, accessible classrooms
Not all learners access vocabulary in the same way. For some students, recalling and spelling technical terms can become a barrier to showing understanding.
Custom Topics helps remove that barrier.
By adapting prediction to match the subject and context, Read&Write continues to support different ways of thinking and learning, helping more students participate fully in classroom writing.
Because when writing feels more accessible, learning becomes more visible.
