What is Access to Work?

Your guide to understanding the Access to Work scheme.

Access to Work (ATW) is a grant scheme to help people with disabilities – and those with a physical or mental health condition – to start or stay in work.

Depending on the needs of the employee, the grant can help pay for specialist software – such as Read&Write for Work and ClaroRead – adapted equipment, a support worker, or travel expenses to and from work.

Who can apply for Access to Work funding?

You are eligible to apply for ATW funding if you have a condition that means you need support to do your job, or to get to and from work. This includes:

  • Neurodivergent condition such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, or ADHD
  • Mental health condition such as anxiety or depression
  • Physical disability such as visual/hearing impairment or mobility issues
  • Long-term health condition such as diabetes or epilepsy

To qualify, you must also:

  • Be a UK resident
  • Be aged 16 or over
  • Be in paid work (or about to start/return to paid work in the next 12 weeks)
  • Live and work in England, Scotland or Wales – the Channel Islands and Isle of Man are not covered, and there is a different system in Northern Ireland

  • Incapacity Benefit
  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Severe Disablement Allowance
  • Income Support
  • National Insurance credits

What support can Access to Work provide?

Access to Work funding helps cover the practical support you need to start or stay in work. It can pay for a range of support and adjustments, including:

Specialist equipment such as disability-related hardware (e.g. ergonomic desks, noise-cancelling headphones)

Specialist software, including Everway tools. Any equipment purchased must be recommended in your Needs Assessment report

A non-medical helper or support worker, such as a British Sign Language interpreter. This cannot be a friend or family member

Extra travel costs if you are unable to use public transport, or if you have additional travel needs related to your disability. The amount you receive depends on your circumstances

Support services for mental health conditions, if you are absent from work or finding it difficult to continue working

Disability awareness training for your colleagues, helping them understand how best to support you

Assistance during job interviews, such as someone to help with communication or access need

Relocation of equipment, if you move to a new location or change jobs

Changing jobs

If you change employers, you may be able to transfer equipment to your new employer. You cannot automatically transfer awards for support workers or travel. You would need to contact the Access to Work team to discuss your new arrangements.
