An Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) sets out the education, health and social care needs of a child or young person up to the age of 25 who requires more support than is available through standard SEND provision. EHCPs include recommendations for assistive technology (AT).
Our solutions are well-established as part of AT provision in schools across the UK, helping schools deliver on the commitments set out in EHCPs, and helping students build independence within those plans.

Reading can be one of the most significant barriers for students in SEND provision, whether that is reading aloud, reading for comprehension, or accessing text within a digital document or image.

For many students in SEND provision, the gap between having ideas and being able to express them is one of the most significant challenges. Whether it's forming sentences, structuring responses, or simply getting started.

Maths can bring challenges for students in SEND, in accessing new concepts and understanding. Making it digital creates new ways to engage with math problems.
Equatio removes the barrier between a student's mathematical thinking and their ability to communicate it. Students can choose to type, handwrite or dictate their maths, and teachers can set accessible digital maths tasks across subjects.

The government's SEND review, published in February 2026, sets out a significant shift in how special educational needs provision will be structured in England. From new Inclusion Standards and Individual
Support Plans to changes around EHCP eligibility, the proposals will affect SENDCos, class teachers, school leaders and families.

"Read&Write helps our SEND children and children who find reading and writing difficult. All of our children use Read&Write for multiple things."

Many young people may experience learning difficulties at some point. This is normal and for most the difficulties can be situational and temporary. A student has special educational needs if they have a learning challenge or disability that makes it more difficult for them to learn than most children their age. There could be problems with schoolwork, communication or behaviour. Children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are likely to need extra or different help from that given to other children their age. This help is known as special educational provision.
Cognitive
Students may experience difficulties in thinking, understanding, and processing. They could find all learning activities difficult, or have particular difficulties with some learning activities such as reading and writing.
Emotional and behavioural
Students who have emotional and behavioural differences may have low self-esteem and lack confidence. They may find it difficult to follow rules or settle down and concentrate properly in school.
Speech, language and communication
Those young people who have difficulties with speech and language may struggle to express themselves or understand what others are saying to them. They may find it hard to make friends or relate to others. They may find it difficult to make sense of the world around them or to organise themselves.
Physical or sensory difficulties
These students may have a disability or a medical condition that has an impact upon their learning. They may have a visual or hearing impairment.
SEND students demand specialised instructional strategies, as well as a structured environment that supports and enhances their learning potential. It’s important to remember that special ed students aren’t incapacitated or unable to learn; they simply learn in a different way to their peers. They need differentiated instruction tailored to their individual learning abilities. Here’s some easy-to-apply classroom strategies which can offer immediate help:
Special education software is digital technology designed to support students with SEND in accessing the curriculum and participating in learning alongside their peers. It includes solutions for reading support, writing assistance, accessible maths, communication, and assessment. Good special education software adapts to the needs of individual students, helping them to engage with content, express their ideas and build independence, rather than relying on constant adult intervention.
We offers a range of education technology used by schools across the UK, including Read&Write, OrbitNote, Equatio and ExamWritePad.
There is a wide range of assistive technology for special education, covering different areas of need. Common categories include literacy support (such as text-to-speech and word prediction), accessible maths technology, PDF and document accessibility software, exam access solutions, and communication aids. The right support will depend on a student's individual needs as set out in their SEND provision or EHCP.
Our solutions span several of these categories, allowing schools to support a broad range of learners with a consistent set of trusted platforms.
Special education technology supports students by removing the barriers that can prevent them from accessing content, participating in lessons and demonstrating their understanding. For a student who finds reading difficult, text-to-speech software means they can access written materials independently. For a student who struggles to write by hand or type, voice-to-text or word prediction support open up new ways to express ideas. For students taking exams, JCQ-compliant technology means they can access the support they are entitled to without needing a human reader or scribe present.
Yes. Several of our products are approved for use in examinations in line with JCQ regulations. Read&Write can act as a computer reader or scribe substitute. OrbitNote's exam mode restricts features to those approved for the specific assessment. Equatio supports students who require a digital format for maths assessments. ExamWritePad is a dedicated, secure word processor designed specifically for exam use.
If you are an exam officer or SENDCo planning access arrangements, we recommend checking the relevant JCQ guidance alongside any product you intend to use.
Choosing the right special education technology starts with understanding each student's individual needs, ideally as set out in their EHCP or SEND provision plan. Consider which areas of learning are presenting the most significant barriers, whether that is reading, writing, maths or access to documents, and identify products that address those specific areas.
It is also worth thinking about ease of use for both students and teachers, how the technology integrates with existing devices and platforms used in your school, and whether the products are appropriate for use in both everyday learning and formal assessment. Our team can support schools in identifying the right combination of products for their setting.
Yes, our products are used across mainstream schools, specialist provisions, and alternative settings. Many of our solutions are designed on a universal access model, meaning they benefit all learners while providing targeted support for those with SEND. This aligns with a neuroinclusion approach to education, where technology is embedded as standard rather than added on only for students who have a formal diagnosis or plan in place.
