What is an IEP?

An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a legally binding document developed for students who qualify for special education services under IDEA. It sets out a student’s current performance levels, learning goals, and the specific support and services they’ll receive.

IEP software helps teams produce documents that meet state-specific and federal requirements under IDEA. This includes ensuring IEPs contain all required components, that timelines are met, and that progress reporting is accurate and consistent. An IEP is developed for students who qualify for special education services under IDEA, and includes specially designed instruction as well as related services. A 504 plan is covered under the Rehabilitation Act and provides accommodations for students with disabilities who do not require specialised instruction. Both are designed to support students, but they differ in eligibility criteria, what they include, and how they are implemented.

RTI (Response to Intervention) and MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) are frameworks used to provide tiered support to all students, including those who may be at risk. An IEP is a legal document for students already identified as needing special education services. The two approaches often run alongside each other: students can receive support through MTSS tiers while also having an IEP in place. Understanding how they relate helps teams coordinate support without gaps.

Yes. Everway’s tools are designed to work within the existing systems schools and districts use. Polaris is designed to work alongside existing district IEP systems, including Unique Learning System as well as  non-Everway platforms, helping districts improve IEP development without replacing their current system.

IEP software is used primarily by special education teachers, special education coordinators, and district-level administrators. It is also used by related services providers such as speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists who contribute to and implement IEPs. In some cases, tools provide visibility for families to understand their child’s goals and progress.
